Collection: Alvar and limestone barrens
These plants can tolerate extreme heat, drought and flooding and high PH. Many of them are also quite short. These two features make them excellent choices to plant next to flagstone walkways or in urban concrete adjacent plantings, or if you are on shallow rocky limestone soil.
Alvars are a globally rare ecosystem of relatively treeless rock barrens, prairies and shrublands. Here there are many specialized plants, many of which are rare in Quebec and Ontario. The Ottawa Valley is a hotspot for Alvars, with most of the known Alvars in Quebec occurring in our region.
