Thicket Creeper
Parthenocissus vitacea
Alternative names: Woodbine
French: Vigne vierge commune
Thicket Creeper, also known as Woodbine, is a vigorous native vine that’s a great alternative to ivy or Virginia creeper. Unlike Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia Creeper), this species does not root along its stem, which makes it a safer choice for growing on fences, pergolas, or buildings without the risk of damaging surfaces.
It can also be used as a ground cover in shadier areas, where it will sprawl naturally across the forest floor or garden bed.
This vine produces dark blue berries in late summer that are an important winter food source for birds. It also supports a wide variety of insects, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly plantings.
Growth habit: Large, climbing or sprawling vine
Height/spread: Can reach 10 m or more with support
Light: Full sun to part shade
Moisture: Average (mesic); adaptable
Soil: Grows in a wide range of soils
Habitat: Forests, thickets, woodland edges
Ecological benefits: Supports birds and insects, non-damaging alternative to ivy
Edible: Not edible for humans (berries are mildly toxic)
