Early Goldenrod
Solidago juncea
Alternative names: Plume Goldenrod, July Goldenrod
French: Verge d’or jonciforme
Early Goldenrod is the first goldenrod to bloom, often flowering as early as July, making it an important early-season nectar source for pollinators. It is easy to recognize thanks to its basal rosette of long, narrow leaves that appear well before the flower stalk emerges.
This species pairs beautifully with Solidago nemoralis—another low-growing goldenrod—which begins to bloom just as S. juncea finishes, allowing you to enjoy a continuous display of golden yellow flowers from mid-summer through fall.
Early Goldenrod is well-suited to dry, sunny, and open habitats like rock barrens, sandy fields, alvars, and roadsides. It is drought-tolerant, thrives in poor soils, and is perfect for naturalizing tough, sunny spots.
