Coptis trifolia
Alternative names: Three-leaved Goldthread
French: Savoyane

Goldthread is a small, slow-growing evergreen groundcover found in the cool, moist understory of shady forests and boggy habitats. This dainty woodland perennial produces tiny white star-like flowers in early summer, rising just above the mossy forest floor and pairing beautifully with other acid-loving shade plants.

Its name comes from the bright yellow, thread-like roots, which were traditionally used in Indigenous medicine for their antimicrobial properties. The foliage is low and glossy, often staying green through the winter.

While beautiful and ecologically significant, Coptis trifolia is very sensitive to drought and disturbance. It is best suited for experienced native plant gardeners with a moist, shady area and acidic, organic-rich or sandy soils. Without ideal conditions, it is prone to drying out and can be difficult to establish.

Height: 5 to 10 cm
Bloom time: June to August (flowers may appear earlier in some regions)
Light: Shade
Moisture: Moist
Soil: Acidic, organic-rich or sandy
Habitat: Shady forests, wetland margins, bogs
Ecological benefits: Evergreen groundcover, supports woodland biodiversity
Edible: Roots used traditionally for medicinal purposes; not for casual consumption
