Nursery for the Earth
Rubus occidentalis (Fr: framboisier noir | En: black raspberry)
Description:
My favourite raspberry, these can be easily identified by they bluish-grey (glaucous) coating and dark fruit. Interestingly, while you cannot usually find regular black raspberries in stores, you can often find "golden raspberries" which are in fact black raspberries with a mutation that makes the fruit a whitish yellow instead of the usual black or dark purple.
These take two years to fruit, with the first year canes always having three leaves and the second year canes having five leaves.
In addition to the fruit providing nourishment for birds and other animals, the canes provide excellent winter nesting habitat for bees and other insects that nest in their hollow stems.
