Description:

Packera paupercula, also known as balsam groundsel or balsam ragwort, is one of the most the characteristic spring wildflower of alvar ecosystems in the Ottawa Valley. Its small yellow flowers can carpet alvars and rock gardens providing a boon to early pollinators and much colour to gardens.

Habitat: Balsam Ragwort is a typical species of the rare alvar prairies found in Ontario and Quebec. It is a hardy species that can thrive in harsh alternating periods of drought and flooding.

Sun requirements: Balsam Ragwort prefers full sun to partial shade and can tolerate harsh, hot conditions typical of alvar prairies.

Moisture requirements: This wildflower can tolerate drought and is well adapted to well-drained soils, making it a great choice for gardens and natural areas with dry or rocky soil.

Soil requirements: Balsam Ragwort is adaptable to a variety of soils but prefers well-drained, rocky soils. 

Height and spread: Balsam Ragwort typically reaches a height of 10-20 cm with a spread of 30-45 cm. It can spread by rhizomes and form low-growing colonies over time.
