Description:
Red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea), commonly known as is one of teh most commonly cultivated native plants. It is a favourite for its stunning bright red branches, which stand out in winter against a snowy backdrop. In addition to its striking appearance, the shrub provides habitat and food for many wildlife species, including birds and small mammals.
Red osier dogwood typically grows between 1 and 4 meters tall, with a spreading, multi-stemmed habit. It prefers moist soils and is commonly found in wetlands, along streams, and in other areas with high moisture levels. However, it is also highly adaptable and can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including sand, clay, and loam.
In the spring and summer, Cornus sericea produces clusters of small white flowers that give way to clusters of white berries in the fall. The berries are an important food source for many bird species, including robins, cedar waxwings, and thrushes. The leaves are oval-shaped and a bright green color, turning reddish-purple in the fall before dropping off.
