Solidago rugosa
Alternative names: Wrinkle-leaf Goldenrod
French: Verge d'or rugueuse
Rough Goldenrod is a distinct and easy-to-recognize goldenrod that thrives in partially shaded, moist conditions, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens or damper spots where other goldenrods may struggle.
It stands out from other goldenrods thanks to its sparsely branched, pyramid-shaped flower clusters, its hairy stems, and its deeply wrinkled leaves—a unique look that makes it easy to tell apart in the garden or in nature.
This goldenrod blooms from late summer into early fall, producing masses of golden-yellow flowers that are hugely important for pollinators at a time when few other flowers are blooming. Later in the season, its seeds provide food for native songbirds, especially during the colder months.
Unlike some aggressive goldenrod species, Rough Goldenrod tends to grow in clumps and spreads slowly, making it a great option for gardeners who want the benefits of goldenrod without worrying about it taking over.
