Small sundrops, is a native wildflower to closely related to the more common evening primroses, but is a small perennial that flowers during the day. This herbaceous perennial is known for its bright yellow cup-shaped flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer. It's a low maintenance plant that provides long-lasting colour in the garden.
Habitat: Small sundrops can be found growing in meadows, rocky and sandy areas and along roadsides in the Ottawa Valley. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate some drought once established.
Sun Requirements: Small sundrops thrive in full sun and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to flower well. In partial shade, it will still grow, but it may produce fewer flowers.
Moisture Requirements: This plant is drought tolerant, but it will grow best in more consistently moist soils.
Soil Requirements: Oenothera perennis is adaptable to a wide range of soils, but it prefers well-drained, fertile soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It will not tolerate waterlogged soils, so it's important to choose a location with good drainage in the garden.
