Small Sundrops
Oenothera perennis
Alternative names: Perennial Evening Primrose (not to be confused with night-flowering species)
French: Onagre vivace
Small Sundrops is a native, day-blooming wildflower closely related to evening primroses. Unlike its larger, night-flowering cousins, this low-growing perennial produces bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers that open in full daylight, offering a cheerful burst of colour from late spring into early summer.
This species is well suited to meadows, sandy or rocky soils, and roadside habitats throughout the Ottawa Valley. Once established, it is drought tolerant and thrives in well-drained, sunny sites, although it will perform best with moderately moist soils. In partial shade, it may grow but produce fewer blooms.
Oenothera perennis is a low-maintenance, long-flowering plant that fits beautifully in rock gardens, pollinator beds, and naturalized plantings. Its adaptability and vibrant display make it a strong candidate for ecological or decorative gardens.
